The main difference is who leads the learning. In a traditional preschool the teacher leads the whole class through the same activity at the same time. In a Montessori preschool each child chooses purposeful work from a prepared environment while the teacher observes and guides. Neither is automatically better, but they suit different children and families.
The classroom
A traditional classroom is usually arranged around the teacher: tables in groups or rows, a board at the front and activities set by the adult. A Montessori classroom is arranged around the child. Shelves are low and open, materials are displayed in an orderly sequence from simple to complex, and children move freely between work spaces on mats and tables. Furniture is child-sized so that children can reach, carry and put away their own materials.
The teacher's role
In traditional settings the teacher is the main source of information, planning lessons and presenting them to the group. In Montessori the teacher is a guide. She introduces a material in a short, precise demonstration, then steps back and watches. Her skill lies in noticing what each child is ready for next, and the child's own attention does most of the work.
Pace and choice
Traditional programmes move at the speed of the group. A child who is ahead may wait, and one who needs more time may be hurried. Montessori children work at their own pace, repeating a task for as long as it interests them. This repetition is how young children build concentration, and it is why a Montessori morning includes a long, uninterrupted work period.
How learning happens
- Traditional: learning often starts with explanation, worksheets and group songs, with symbols such as letters and numbers introduced early.
- Montessori: learning starts with the hands. Children handle sandpaper letters, counting beads and graded blocks before meeting abstract symbols.
Mixed ages
Traditional classes group children strictly by age. Montessori classrooms usually mix ages across a few years, so younger children learn by watching older ones, and older children consolidate what they know by helping. Our programme follows three stages, Pre-KG (ages 2 to 3), KG1 (3 to 4) and KG2 (4 to 5), in one familiar environment.
Discipline and independence
Traditional preschools often manage behaviour through adult-led rules, rewards and group routines. Montessori builds self-discipline through freedom within limits: children choose their work, but must respect people, materials and the shared space. The aim is a child who can choose a task, complete it and tidy up without being told.
Which suits your child?
- A child who loves doing things for themselves, is curious about how things work or needs time to warm up often thrives in Montessori.
- A child who enjoys group games, songs and a lively, teacher-led atmosphere may enjoy a traditional setting.
- Families who value a calm, orderly environment and early independence often prefer Montessori; families who want a more structured, whole-class routine may prefer the traditional model.
Many settings are a mixture, which is why the label matters less than what happens in the room. Our guide to finding a good Montessori school in Jeddah explains what to look for.
Common myths
- "Montessori children do whatever they like." Freedom is real but bounded: children choose from materials the teacher has prepared, and the ground rules are clear and consistent.
- "There is no structure." The structure is built into the environment, the materials and the long work period, not into a timetable of whole-class lessons.
- "Children play all day and do not learn." Early reading, writing and number work are all part of the Montessori materials, introduced through the hands first.
- "Traditional means no thinking." Good traditional teachers also build curiosity; the difference is mainly who sets the pace.
