Is Your 2-Year-Old Ready for Nursery? A Guide for Parents in Jeddah

Yes, a child who has turned two can start nursery in Jeddah, and many do. The right moment depends on readiness more than on the calendar: a child who can manage a short morning away from home, show interest in others and communicate basic needs is usually ready. At Kawkab Al-Tifl Al-Hurr, Pre-KG welcomes children from 2 to 3 years old in a calm Montessori classroom.

Signs your 2-year-old may be ready

  • Short separations go reasonably well. Your child can stay with a grandparent or relative for a few hours.
  • Curiosity about other children. They watch, imitate or play beside others.
  • Beginning of self-help. They try to feed themselves, remove a jacket or wash their hands with help.
  • Communication. Words, gestures or sounds that let a caring adult understand wants and needs.
  • A fairly steady routine. Regular meals and naps make the nursery morning easier to adapt to.

If most of these are true, your child is likely ready. If few are, you may simply want to wait a little or begin with a shorter day and build up.

What a Pre-KG morning offers a 2-year-old

Pre-KG covers ages 2 to 3 and is designed around the way very young children learn: through movement, senses and repetition. A morning includes:

  • Practical life. Pouring, spooning, buttoning and carrying a tray, so a child builds coordination and the pride of doing things independently.
  • Sensory exploration. Materials to match, sort and compare by colour, size and texture.
  • Language. Songs, stories and naming real objects in Arabic and English, with Quran introduced gently through listening.
  • Movement and outdoor time. Space to climb, run and use the whole body.
  • Rhythm and routine. A familiar order to the morning gives young children a feeling of security.

Half-day or full-day?

For most two-year-olds, a morning is enough. Our school day runs Sunday to Thursday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and hourly care is available if you need extra time. A short, happy day usually works better than a long, tiring one while a child is settling in. See our daycare in Jeddah guide for how to compare hours and options.

How to prepare your child

  1. Visit first. Spend time in the classroom together so the place is already familiar.
  2. Talk about it positively. Use simple words: "You will play, listen to stories and see friends, and then I will come back."
  3. Practise short separations. A morning with a relative is good practice.
  4. Build a calm routine at home. Consistent sleep and meal times make nursery easier.
  5. Dress for independence. Simple clothes that a child can help with save frustration.
  6. Keep goodbyes short. Say goodbye warmly, once, and leave. Lingering often increases distress.

What the first weeks look like

Expect some tears in the first days, and perhaps a dip in the second or third week as the novelty fades. This is a normal part of adjusting. Teachers will comfort your child, redirect them to an activity and share updates with you. We use a parent app so you can see how your child's day went, with attendance, photos and messages.

What if my child is younger than two?

Our nursery is for children aged 2 to 5, so a child younger than two is outside our range. If you are choosing for a younger child, wait until the second birthday or ask other settings about their age ranges; we would rather say so plainly than promise what we do not offer.

Questions to ask on a visit

  • How do teachers help a child who is upset at drop-off?
  • How much freedom of movement do two-year-olds have in the classroom?
  • How are toileting, snacks and rest handled?
  • How will I be updated during the day?

When you are ready, message us on WhatsApp to book a visit. Tours run Sunday to Thursday between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
