In Saudi Arabia, "nursery", "nursery school", "daycare", "preschool" and "kindergarten" are used almost interchangeably for the years before primary school, and most settings in Jeddah describe themselves with two or three of these words at once. The official Saudi stage names are different again: Pre-KG, KG1, KG2 and Tamhidi (تمهيدي). This guide explains what each word means in Saudi Arabia compared with the United Kingdom and the United States, which word fits which age, what expat parents usually get wrong when they search, and which term to type into the search bar depending on what you actually need. It ends with how the stages at Kawkab Al-Tifl Al-Hurr, for children aged 3 to 5, map onto these terms.
Why the words are so confusing
Each English-speaking country built its own early-years system and then named it differently. British parents grew up with "nursery" and "reception"; American parents with "daycare", "preschool" and "kindergarten" as the first year of school. Saudi Arabia adopted English labels for its own ladder, and the result in Jeddah is a mixture: a sign may say "Nursery and Kindergarten", the website may say "Preschool", and the enrolment form may say KG1. None of these is wrong; they are different vocabularies for the same few years.
What each word usually means
Nursery
In the United Kingdom, a nursery is a childcare setting for the youngest children, often full-day, and "nursery class" can also mean the year before reception. In Jeddah, "nursery" (حضانة) is the everyday word for any setting that takes children before school, and it is the term most parents, Saudi and expat alike, use first. Our nursery in Jeddah guide explains what to look for once you have found one.
Nursery school
"Nursery school" carries a stronger sense of learning than "nursery" alone. In Britain it usually means a setting with a planned educational programme for children aged around three and four. In Jeddah the phrase is less common on signs, but it is what many families mean: a place that teaches, not only minds. If you are searching for "nursery schools near me" in Jeddah, you will see results labelled nursery, preschool and kindergarten, and you should read the age range rather than the label.
Daycare and day care
In the United States, "daycare" means supervised care while parents work, usually across a full working day and often from a very young age. In Jeddah, families use "daycare" when the hours matter most, such as flexible or hourly care, and the word says more about the schedule than about the curriculum. Our daycare in Jeddah guide covers the hours question in detail.
Preschool
"Preschool" is the American word for the educational years before kindergarten, usually ages three to five. In Jeddah it is used mainly by schools that want to signal a structured programme, and by expat families. It overlaps almost completely with the Saudi KG1 and KG2 stages. See our guide to preschool in Jeddah for the right starting age.
Kindergarten
Here the two systems diverge sharply. In the United States, kindergarten is the first year of primary school, for five-year-olds. In Saudi Arabia, kindergarten (روضة) is the whole stage before Grade 1 and is divided into levels. A Saudi "kindergarten" therefore starts earlier than an American one and covers several years. Our kindergarten in Jeddah guide walks through those levels.
Pre-KG, KG1, KG2 and Tamhidi
These are the stage names you will meet on Saudi enrolment forms and in licensed settings. Pre-KG (2–3) is the year before the formal kindergarten levels. KG1 (3–4) and KG2 (4–5) are the two kindergarten levels. Tamhidi (تمهيدي), sometimes written KG3, is the preparatory year immediately before Grade 1 in the national system. A setting that uses these names is speaking the official language.
Which word fits which age
| Term | Typical age | What it usually means in Jeddah |
|---|---|---|
| Nursery (حضانة) | 2 to 4 | The everyday word for any pre-school setting; check the age range on each listing |
| Nursery school | 3 to 5 | A nursery with a planned learning programme, not only care |
| Daycare / day care | 2 to 5 | Care defined by hours, often flexible or hourly, rather than by curriculum |
| Preschool | 3 to 5 | A structured programme before Grade 1; overlaps with KG1 and KG2 |
| Kindergarten (روضة) | 3 to 6 | The whole Saudi stage before Grade 1, divided into KG1, KG2 and Tamhidi |
| Pre-KG (ما قبل الروضة) | 2 to 3 | The first year, before the formal kindergarten levels |
| KG1 (المستوى الأول) | 3 to 4 | First kindergarten level |
| KG2 (المستوى الثاني) | 4 to 5 | Second kindergarten level |
| Tamhidi (تمهيدي) / KG3 | 5 to 6 | Preparatory year immediately before Grade 1 |
A simple way to remember it: at age 2, search for nursery or Pre-KG; at 3, nursery school, preschool or KG1; at 4, preschool or KG2; at 5, kindergarten or Tamhidi. Whatever the sign says, the age range and the daily programme are what you are actually choosing.
What expat parents usually get wrong
- Assuming "kindergarten" means age five. American families often skip Saudi kindergartens for a three-year-old because the name sounds too old. In Jeddah, KG1 starts at three.
- Assuming "nursery" means care only. British families sometimes expect a nursery to be a childminding arrangement, when many Jeddah nurseries run a full educational morning with Arabic, English and Quran.
- Searching only in English. Many excellent settings list themselves under the Arabic words حضانة or روضة. Our guide for expat families choosing a nursery in Jeddah has more on this.
- Expecting school-day hours. Most Jeddah kindergartens run mornings only, which surprises parents used to a long daycare day. Ask about hours before anything else.
- Comparing fees across different terms. A "daycare" fee for long hours and a "preschool" fee for a short morning are not the same product. Fees everywhere depend on age, days and hours, and are confirmed by message or visit.
Which term to search for in Jeddah, depending on what you need
- You need flexible or hourly hours: search "daycare Jeddah" or "hourly nursery Jeddah", then confirm the exact closing time by phone.
- You want a curriculum, such as Montessori: search "Montessori nursery Jeddah" or "preschool Jeddah" and look for a described daily programme.
- You want Arabic and English together, with Quran: search "bilingual kindergarten Jeddah" and ask how much of the day each language is used.
- Your child is two: search "nursery for a 2-year-old Jeddah" or "Pre-KG Jeddah".
- Your child is four or five: search "KG2 Jeddah" or "kindergarten Jeddah" and check how the setting prepares children for Grade 1.
How the stages at Kawkab Al-Tifl Al-Hurr map to these terms
Kawkab Al-Tifl Al-Hurr is a Montessori nursery and kindergarten on Mohammed Abdulkarim Street in Al Faisaliyyah, Jeddah, with more than 10 years of experience in early childhood education. In the words above, we are a nursery school, a preschool and a kindergarten at once, because our stages run from ages 3 to 5 in two levels: KG1 (3–4) and KG2 (4–5). A parent searching "daycare" will recognise our mornings, Sunday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with hourly care for families who need it. A parent searching "preschool" will recognise the prepared Montessori environment, the qualified teachers, and the daily Modern Standard Arabic, English and Quran. A parent searching "kindergarten" will find the official Saudi stage names on our enrolment form. The building has CCTV, and families follow the day through a parent app. Fees depend on the child's age, the days attended and the hours, and are confirmed by message or during a visit.
If you are still unsure which word fits your child, tell us their age and the hours you need. Message us on WhatsApp and we will explain which stage they would join and arrange a visit during a normal morning.
